Community — Cinco De Mayo celebrated at Brown Plaza

Brown Plaza’s Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will start Friday, May 3, and go on to Sunday, May 5 at San Felipe’s historic Brown Plaza.  

The celebrations began April 28 with Annual Miss Cinco De Mayo Pageant. The pageant winners included Hailey Alonso (Miss Cinco de Mayo), Kianna Villa (Miss Cinco de Mayo Teen), Maddie Maltos (Jr Miss Cinco de Mayo), Leilani Garcia (Miss Fiesta), and Bella Dominguez (Lil Miss Cinco de Mayo). 

The fiesta continues on May 3 with the opening ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m. The night parade will start at 7:45 p.m. and begin on the intersection of San Felipe Avenue and Garza Street. The theme for the parade is a tribute to Mexican and Mexican/American singing artists. 

The pageant winners will be presented Friday, and the General Grand Marshal Ruben Barragan, will be presented during the ceremony.

After the parade, food booths and vendors will be present at Brown Plaza till midnight with singing performances by the San Felipe Del Rio All District Elementary Choir, and various DJs will be providing music all three days.

The fiesta continues on Saturday, May 4, from 4 p.m. to midnight and on Sunday, May 5, from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday more performances will be presented by Effecto 4, Conjunto Mi Rey, and La Quimica. 

Sunday, the final dance and music performances is performed by Casa de la Cultura Dancers, Del Rio High School Mariachi, Mariachi Del Rio, Folklorico Dancers from Acuna, Mariachi Relampago and Milla 22. 

Winners will also be announced for an art contest that was held for elementary school students and an auction for the artwork showcased will follow afterwards. Kids were able to submit art based off this year’s theme: Mexican and Mexican/American signing artists, and the winners will take away a small recliner and an art kit. 

Dolores Martinez, treasurer of the Brown Plaza Association, recommends people to bring their own chairs and to not bring ice chests to the festivities.
