Val Verde County Commissioners Court members recently honored a group of Del Rio High School athletes who have exceled at the regional and state level.
Commissioners court members during their April regular term meeting on April 10 unanimously approved a resolution “honoring Del Rio High School sophomore Kailyn Lomas for winning the 105 weight class state championship” and a group of other high school athletes and their coach.
County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. read the resolution after announcing the agenda item and thanking the group of young people set to receive it for attending the meeting “and for representing our city, our school district, our county.”
Owens read, “Whereas, the Val Verde County Commissioners Court believes that the accomplishments of our local youth, as well as those of our coaching staff and Head Coach David Gomez Jr., should be honored, and;
“Whereas the sports programs that offer guidance, knowledge and life skills to our local youth should be publicly appreciated, and;
“Whereas, the Val Verde County Commissioners Court recognizes the personal sacrifice and dedication necessary for these young men and women to excel, now therefore, be it resolved by the Commissioners Court of Val Verde County that the following be so recognized:
“Kailyn Lomas, DRHS sophomore, state champion in the 105 weight class. Kailyn posted a season total high total of 760 pounds at state, squatting 315 pounds, benching 140 pounds and deadlifting 305 pounds. She also placed third place at regionals. Kailyn is a two-time regional medalist and a two-time state qualifier in two seasons. She holds six school records including best overall pound-for-pound lifter.

She holds 10 school records including best overall total to add to her regional and state records.

She also placed fifth at regionals. Chloe is a two-year letterman, medaling at regionals and state this year. She holds the school records for squat and bench in the 105 weight class.
“We also honor the following state qualifiers: Aniah Gonzales, Gabby Diaz, Caleb Rodriguez, Jorge Herrera, Domingo Sanchez, Joaquinn Fuentes, George Avalos, Tadeo Talavera and Luis Rodriguez.
“And the following regional qualifiers: Betsally Garcia, Kayla Williams, Caitlyn Gonzalez, Valeria Reyes, Victoria De Los Santos, Hannah Hurtado, Mia Hernandez, Cadence Rodriguez, Joe Ryan Meza and Moses Fernandez.
“This resolution shall become effective immediately upon passage by commissioners court,” the judge read.
Owens told the young athletes and their coach the resolution would always be on file in the county clerk’s office and that one day, when they had children of their own, “you can show them that this court, that Val Verde County, really and truly appreciates everything that you all did.”
Owens then led the court and audience in a round of applause for the athletes and their coach.
County Commissioner Pct. 3 Beau Nettleton then made a motion to approve the resolution, with County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez giving the second. The motion then passed unanimously.
