A father and son picked up $20,500 on Father’s Day in the Bass Champs Tournament held on Lake Amistad here June 21.
Jeffrey and 9-year-old Kasen Piel caught 19.43 pounds with three large bass. The duo also snagged the tournament’s big bass of the day with a 9.85 pound lunker. The big bass came with a $500 check as well.
The father and son duo edged out 156 other teams. The tournament was designed as a three-fish event, where each team weighed in their top three fish.
Although they live in Canyon Lake, Texas now, Jeffrey has plenty of experience on Lake Amistad National Recreation Area’s waters.
“Jeffrey’s dad was a catfish and striper guide on Amistad for 40 years,” said local professional angler Ray Hanselman.
Del Rio fishermen Craig Alexander and Darrell Shadwick finished 15th, earning an $850 check. Meanwhile, former Del Rio police chief Waylon Bullard was on a team that finished 17th, winning $800 with a bit more than 11 pounds of bass.
