Four members of the Del Rio Rams football team were recognized for their efforts in the classroom during the 2020-21 season.
Offensive lineman Isaac Salazer, linebackers Jorge Faz and Andrew Garza and defensive back Orlando Guerrero were selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State list.
Salazar was a second team selection. Faz, Garza and Guerrero were all named as honorable mention selections.
According to the coaches association, to be nominated for academic all-state through its organization, a student must be an athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with the team; of good moral character; a senior; and have an overall grade point average of 92 or above, including courses from grades 9 to 11 and courses completed from grade 12.
Players that are nominated then have their nominations issued points based on criteria that include GPA, class rank, SAT and/or ACT score. The points accumulated from those categories then place the nominees on different lists, from Elite to honorable mention.
“We understand that students’ performance in the classroom can sometimes be difficult to manage while participating in athletics, but their hard work has not gone unnoticed,” a release from the coaches association read. “We applaud them for their commitment and dedication to perform with the highest of excellence academically and on the field or court.”
