City staff and administrators have been working on the coming year’s budget, and the document is nearly ready for presentation to the city council.
City Finance Director Alberta Barrett presented the proposed budget cycle calendar to Del Rio City Council members during their regular meeting on July 25.
“Our original intent was to present the budget to the mayor and council Aug. 1. We’re actually requesting to move that to Aug. 8. Based on the last meeting, we have some things that we want to change and revise, so we feel like we’ll have a better product for the council if we put it to Aug. 8, and then the next day, Aug. 9, we would do our public hearing notices,” Barrett told the council.
“On Aug. 15, we’d cover the budget in a special meeting, starting at 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If need be, we’d add Aug. 22, which is not on the current calendar, but if needed, it’s a regular council meeting. We will discuss the budget further there,” Barrett said.
She noted a public hearing on the proposed budget and city tax rate will be scheduled for Sept. 5, during a special city council meeting, and the council will consider and adopt the budget and tax rate during its Sept. 12 meeting.
“Then at our regular meeting on Sept. 26, we would do our last budget amendment for this current year’s budget,” Barrett said.
After Barrett finished presenting the budget calendar, Councilman Jim DeReus noted city council members had received notice that Aug. 8 will be the opening of the new north side elementary school at 5:30 p.m. and asked Barrett if she had planned a budget workshop session for that day.
When Barrett replied she had not planned a budget workshop for that date, DeReus indicated council members could join school district officials for the opening ceremony at the new school and still attend that day’s regular council meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The council took no action following the presentation of the budget calendar.
