A routine security check caused Laughlin officials to close the West Gate for most of the day Monday.
“Laughlin takes base security seriously and performs routine security checks on vehicles entering or exiting installation,” said Capt. Christine Del Aguila, a Laughlin spokesperson and 47h Flying Training Wing public affairs officer. “During a routine security check, our defenders detected residue that can be used in some explosives, which prompted our 47th Security Forces Squadron to execute a response plan.”
Base personnel use a number of methods for routine checks, from people checking vehicles, sensors as well as military working dogs.
When the potential threat was discovered, the base transitioned their primary entry from the West Gate to the North Gate, just off US Highway 90.
However, moving the main entrance and exit for nearly 4,000 people is never an easy task, but Del Aguila said there was a very simple reason.
“It was an abundance of caution,” she said.
The wing’s top cop said protecting people was always a number one priority.
“Base installation security and the safety of our personnel is our top priority,” said Maj. Robert Stone, 47th Security Forces Squadron commander. “Our Airmen followed their security protocol checklist upon detection of a substance, and the decision was made to respond accordingly to validate the safety and security of Laughlin AFB.”
