The International Good Neighbor Council, the organization that organizes Fiesta de Amistad’s announced the winners of its 2023 Art Contest. The organization invited Del Rio High School students to submit their artwork celebrating the event’s theme of Good Neighbors.
Judges scored in five areas, said the event’s organizer Dora Alcala, former
Del Rio mayor: “We are looking for artwork that depicts the positives between these two great cities.”
It’s an event between Ciudad Acuna and Del Rio.
The first place winner was Lucy Ocada who received a prize of $500 and second place went to Emely Escamilla, who won $400. The third place winner was Gina Galvan, who won $300.
Fourth place honors went to Briana Juarez and Eligio Flores took Honorable Mention and they both won $150.
The IGNC will use the art for promoting various events and it will auction the art off at next year’s Wine and Cheese Event as a fundraiser for scholarships. “This past year, we raised $5,000 for scholarships,” Alcala said.
Other students who competed were Adrian Gomez, Carolina Fabila, Ashley Gutierrez, Gabriela Vasquez and Leah Ayala.
Sheri Vela, Del Rio High School art teacher who teaches all of the students said that the contest is a big help to the students.
“The Fiesta de Amistad art contest allows our students to help other students in our community to earn scholarships,” Vela said. In addition, the featured artists gain exposure to their artistic talent and possible career paths.”
