Del Rioan Arturo Rodriguez has filed a declaration to seek election as an independent candidate for the office of County Commissioner Pct. 1.
Val Verde County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. told the 830 Times Monday that Rodriguez filed a “declaration of intent to run as an independent candidate for the general election for state and county officers” on Dec. 11.
In it, Rodriguez indicates his intent to run for the office of County Commissioner Pct. 1.
The Democrat who currently holds the office, Martin Wardlaw, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2024.
Seven Democrats and one Republican have also filed applications for the County Commissioner Pct. 1 seat with their respective party chairs.
Owens said once the March 2024 Democratic and Republican Party Primary Elections are over, Rodriguez will have to follow a procedure described by state election law for his name to appear on the November 2024 General Election ballot.
On his declaration of intent, Rodriguez lists his occupation as “retired.”
