Bike Del Rio will have its first bike ride of the year, starting off from Mesquite Creek Outfitters on Tuesday.
Every Tuesday, bicyclists with the group meet for an evening bike ride around downtown Del Rio and the San Felipe area. The first Tuesday of February 2024 will be the first bike ride of the year put together by the Bike Del Rio support group.
Bicyclists planning to participate in the ride are asked to meet at Mesquite Creek Outfitters’ patio area at 5:30 p.m. From there, they will ride down Main Street, around the creek in the Brown Plaza area, and finish back at downtown at 7 p.m.
Mesquite offers $5 drafts to the Bike Del Rio group as a thank you for supporting their business, according to Roody Rodriguez, marketing manager for Mesquite Creek.
Stevie Renaud, president of Bike Del Rio, said these bike rides have been put together by their group for the past two years. She said their bike rides are beginner friendly so that more people can join.
Renaud said the motivation to form the group and start the bike rides was to advocate and show support for additional bike trails, paths and lanes in the city.
“We formalized the group to show the city and the city council and decision makers that there is a demand in Del Rio (for bike trails) and that there is a strong bike culture here,” Renaud said.
Renaud said the group’s Facebook page had an increase of 300 followers since last year.
Because the bike rides take place in the evening, one of the requirements to join the rides is to bring a bike with lights on it.
People can purchase bike lights at Zen Bikes, 1003 Veterans Blvd., and Renaud said that business, too, is a big supporter of the Bike Del Rio group.
