SPORTS — Seven Queens lifters qualify for regionals

It took just one meet for five members of the Del Rio High School girls powerlifting team to qualify for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s Region V meet.
Aniah Gonzales, Betsally Garcia, Desi Coronado, Kailyn Lomas and Chloe Juárez each hit their qualifying weight totals in their respective divisions at the East Central Invitational meet Jan. 20 to advance to the regional meet at the end of the regular season.
Gonzales, Lomas and Garcia each took first in their respective divisions at East Central as the team finished third overall.
Gonzales won the 97-pound division with a total weight of 565 pounds. She had a 235-pound squat, a 120-pound bench press and a 210-pound deadlift.
Lomas took first in the 114-pound division. Her total weight of 680 pounds included a 285-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 270-pound deadlift.
Garcia was first in the 148-pound division with a total of 880 pounds lifted. She had a 350-pound squat, a 180-pound bench press and a 350-pound deadlift.
Juarez was second in the 105-pound division with 615 pounds. Coronado was third in the 242-pound division with 955 pounds. Maritssa Robles was fourth in the 132-pound division with 645 pounds. Caitlyn Gonzalez was fourth in the 198-pound division with 765 pounds. Kayla Williams was fifth in the 123-pound division with 660 pounds. Victoria “Tori” De Los Santos was fifth in the 242+ division with 680 pounds.
Next up for the team was the Uvalde Strong Invitational, about 70 miles from Del Rio. Del Rio finished second behind Crystal City.
Del Rio’s girls had just one first place finish among its lifters, but all 12 lifters that competed finished among the top five overall in their respective divisions.
In addition, two more of the Queens lifters qualified for the regional meet by hitting the necessary weight.
Mia Hernandez and Valeria Reyes each qualified for the regional meet in the 97-pound weight class.
Garcia captured her second first place of the season by winning the 148-pound division with 900 pounds lifted. She had a squat of 360 pounds, a 185-pound bench press and a 355-pound deadlift.
Gonzales was second in the 97-pound division with 590 pounds. Lomas was also second in the 105-pound division with 710 pounds. Gabby Diaz was second at 114 pounds with a total weight of 625 pounds. Gonzalez was second in the 198-pound division with 800 pounds. Coronado was also second in the 242-pound division with 995 pounds. Rounding out the second place finishes was De Los Santos, who was second in the 242+ division with 730 pounds.
Hernandez grabbed third in the 97-pound weight class with 565 pounds. Also taking third was Zatchel Contreras who took the number three spot in the 181-pound division with 700 pounds.
Juarez was fourth in the 105-pound weight class with 645 pounds.
Reyes was fifth in the 97-pound division with 515 pounds. Robles was also fifth in the 132-pound division with 645 pounds.
