NEWS: Man arrested for assault on a public servant

On February 18th, 2024, at approximately 7:14 P.M. the Del Rio Police Department responded to the 400 block of Cuellar Street for a disturbance in progress.

Upon arrival police met with a male outside of the residence identified as Diego Cantu; 41 years of age. Cantu denied his involvement in a disturbance. A female at the scene confirmed the disturbance but added it was a verbal disagreement and no physical altercation occurred between the parties.

Police requested a warrant check and learned Cantu was wanted out of Val Verde County. Police informed Cantu about the outstanding arrest warrant and attempted to take him into custody. Cantu resisted police but was later subdued and handcuffed. As police escorted Cantu to the patrol unit, Cantu struck an officer causing pain and discomfort.

Cantu was arrested and charged with the offenses of Assault on a Public Servant, Resisting Arrest Search or Transport. Cantu was also charged with the arrest warrant for the original charge of Prohibited Substance or Item in a Correctional Facility. Cantu was transported to the police station for processing. He was later released to the custody of GEO Correctional Facility
