A re-elected city councilman and a new councilman will be sworn in during a special Del Rio City Council meeting Tuesday.
The city council has scheduled the special meeting to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers at City Hall, 109 W. Broadway St.
The first order of business on the council’s agenda will be approval of an ordinance “providing for the canvass of the returns of the city of Del Rio General Election held on May 4, 2024; declaring the official results of said city General Election and declaring that certain candidates are duly elected as city officials.”
As part of their consideration of the ordinance, council members will
first canvass the votes cast in the election for City Councilperson-At-Place A, held by Mayor Pro-tem Steve Webb.
There were four candidates in this race: Webb, Carmen Gutierrez, Elsa Reyes and Arturo Rodriguez.
No candidates won the race outright. According to unofficial election results announced May 4 by County Clerk Teresa Esther Chapoy, who administered the election for the city, Gutierrez and Reyes were the top two vote getters.
The second ordinance to be considered by the council on Tuesday will order and set a date for the runoff election for the Councilperson-At-Large, Place A, seat.
As part of the first ordinance, the council will also declare J.P. Sanchez elected uncontested for the Councilperson-At-Large, Place B, seat he currently holds.
Finally, as part of the first ordinance, the council will canvass the results of the election for Councilperson District III.
Randy Quiñones will be declared duly elected to the position after he defeated the incumbent, District III Councilwoman Alexandra Falcon Calderon.
After council approves the two ordinances, Calderon will be recognized for her service to the city.
Sanchez and Quiñones will then be sworn in and formally welcomed.
