Downtown Del Rio became a little more vibrant Saturday morning, when a new mural was unveiled at Main and East Broadway.
The mural was unveiled Saturday morning during a 26-minute ceremony that included remarks by Al Arreola, city of Del Rio mayor; Marcos Mares, the mural’s creator; Lupita De La Paz, Casa de la Cultura executive director; Enrique Trevino, owner of The Studio at the Edge where the mural is located and concluded with a short concert by Del Rio High School’s mariachi band.
According to De La Paz Del Rio has nearly 30 murals, with some small ones on electrical boxes.
The newest mural is titled Ciudad del Progreso, meaning City of Progress, said Mares.
“It’s about one city with two countries,” said Mares. “Plural voices as one.”
The mural is 14-feet high and 43-feet across, located on the side of The Studio at the Edge.
The city is happy to receive the new addition to its artistic side.
“The Casa de la Cultura and Lupita De La Paz have brought so much culture to our community, and this is just one more example,” said Arreola.
Those feelings mean a lot to Mares. “I’m happy but I’m also very honored,” Mares said. “It’s another chance to show my work to the city of Del Rio and I’m very honored they accepted my work.”
Arreola is very excited about Mares’ plans. “I recently spoke with Marcos Mares and he mentioned he has some ideas in the works,” Arreola said. “I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next for our community.”
