City of Del Rio Police Department press release

On July 24th, 2024 at approximately 10:54 p.m. the Del Rio Police Department responded to the area of the 900 block of East Viesca Street regarding a reckless driver doing donuts (accelerated circular patterns) on the roadway. The suspect vehicle was described as a white, Ford Ranger.

While approaching the area, an officer saw the vehicle matching the description at the intersection of Railway and E. Gutierrez St. The vehicle failed to stop at the designated stop point and failed to signal while making a turn. Police activated the emergency equipment, attempting to conduct a traffic stop for the violations observed and to further investigate the initial reckless driving complaint.  The driver of the vehicle failed to stop for police and began to travel at an accelerated speed on East Morin Street.

The vehicle came to a stop at the 800 block of East Viesca Street and a male subject exited the vehicle. The male walked away from the vehicle and continued to disregard police commands to stop. Police unholstered their department issued taser and gave several additional commands to the male subject who refused to comply.  The taser was deployed and the subject was effectively taken to the ground. After the taser effect, the male began to actively resist the officers and after a brief struggle he was subdued.

The male identified as Jose E. Duran Jr.; 39 years of age was arrested for the offense of Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle; Reckless Driving and Resisting Arrest Search or Transportation. Duran was transported to the police station for processing and was later transported to GEO Correctional Facility.
