The Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning death of a man whose body was recovered Sunday
night from Lake Amistad, Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez has confirmed.
Martinez told The 830 Times a National Park Service official with the Amistad National Recreation Area (ANRA) notified the sheriff’s office that a man had drowned in the lake at 5:08 p.m. Sunday.
“The call we received was that there had been a suspected drowning at the ‘Cliffs’ area of Lake Amistad near Diablo East,” Martinez said.
Sheriff’s office deputies and investigators, as well as members of the Border Patrol’s tactical unit (BORTAC) and ANRA National Park Service rangers, converged on the area and began a search for the drowning victim.
Martinez said the man, described as a 21-year-old who is not from the local area, was last seen swimming in the lake near the Diablo East Cliffs, a popular swimming, picnicking and sunbathing site.
Martinez said the man’s body was recovered from the lake about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
The sheriff said the circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation.
