Del Rio Police Department detectives today are continuing their investigation into a stabbing that occurred along the San Felipe Creek on Wednesday afternoon.
Del Rio police were notified about the incident at 4:42 p.m. Wednesday.
DRPD Detective James Biscaino, the officer in charge of the case, told The 830 Times on Friday officers were sent to an area of the walkway along the San Felipe Creek near 101 Bridge St.
“The nature of the initial call was that there had been a possible stabbing,” Biscaino told The 830 Times in an interview Friday.
Biscaino said patrol officers who arrived at the scene found an injured male juvenile with a stab wound on the right side of his abdomen. The detective said the patrol officer summoned an emergency medical services team from Val Verde Regional Medical Center.
The injured juvenile was transported to the emergency room, where he was treated and later released.
Biscaino declined to say how old the juvenile is.
A statement issued by the police department Thursday noted detectives “arrived on scene and interviewed several witnesses, and a suspect was developed.”
The suspect, also a juvenile male, was located and detained in the 200 block of Barrera Avenue, near the area where the stabbing occurred. The suspect has been charged with the offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Asked about the relationship between the victim and suspect, Biscaino said, “They’re both students at local schools.”
DRPD Capt. Hubert Smith, who leads the police department’s criminal investigations division, said, “What we’ve found out is that, apparently, after school – and we’re not saying they are part of a gang – these juveniles, and there are multiple juveniles, set up a time and date where they will ‘square off’ with each other.”
“They’re getting together, and they’ll pick who fights who. . . We don’t know all the specifics, all we know is that they got together, a fight broke out, and at that point, somebody pulled a weapon, a knife, and the stabbing occurred,” Smith added.
Biscaino and Smith said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
DRPD Capt. Robert Guzman said the investigation into the stabbing has been conducted with the collaboration of the local public school district.
“The officials at the school district have been very helpful in our investigation, and everyone has been working in unison to ensure the safety of all of our students,” Guzman said.
