Samuel Curtis gave it his all, but the Del Rio High School junior will not be running at this year’s state cross-country meet.

Curtis, Del Rio’s lone representative at this year’s Region IV-6A Boys Cross-Country Meet in Corpus Christi, finished 117th in Monday’s race. The top four teams and top 10 finishers not affiliated with those schools advance to the state meet in Round Rock in November.

Curtis finished the Corpus Christi course in a time of 18:06.25. The top finisher was San Antonio Reagan’s Gavin Chapa. The senior finished in 15:24.28. He finished fourth at the District 30-6A Cross-Country Meet in Del Rio to qualify for the regional meet.

Austin Vandegrift won the team championship with 27 points. The four top runners from the school finished in the top 10 overall and three of those four runners are underclassmen.

San Antonio Johnson finished second with 129 points. Also headed to state will be Harlingen, who was third with 132 points, and Round Rock, which was fourth with 133 points.

District 30-6A’s top team at the regional meet was Eagle Pass. The Eagles finished sixth overall with 188 points. The Eagles’ top runner, freshman Alex Alvarez, advanced to State as an individual. Alvarez finished third at the district meet but was the top runner from 30-6A at regionals as he finished in 16:34.30, edging Laredo United senior Aaron Vidaurri, who was district champion, by about a second for the final individual spot.

The State Cross-Country meet will be held Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
