One Del Rio Fire Department firefighter “sustained minor burns” as he and other city and county firefighters battled a house fire in south Del Rio Monday, DRFD Chief David Harrison confirmed today.
Harrison said the DRFD was notified about the fire at 411 Maximo St. in the San Felipe neighborhood of south Del Rio at 12:40 p.m. Monday.
Harrison said the city fire department responded with 17 people and nine fire units, and “the Val Verde County Fire Department was called in to assist with the overhaul.”
Harrison explained that “overhauling” includes “putting out hot spots after main fire is put out, and it is a labor-intensive time-consuming operation.”
Harrison said there were no civilian injuries as a result of the fire, and noted that firefighters’ “best guess” as to where the fire started is in the carport adjacent to the house.
He said the house was occupied, but none of the residents were home at the time the fire started.
“One firefighter sustained minor burns during the operation,” Harrison said in an email to The 830 Times this morning. The chief said in a telephone interview today the injured firefighter was treated at the scene by an emergency medical services team that responded from Val Verde Regional Medical Center.
The fire chief said DRFD and VVCFD crews remained at the scene for several hours until 3:20 p.m. Monday.
Harrison said the cause of the fire has been listed as undetermined.
“There was really no way to make a determination because of the condition of the building,” Harrison said.
