County residents once again spoke to county commissioners court in opposition to a route between a proposed second international bridge and U.S. Highway 90.
County residents Kathy and Segundo Flores spoke to county commissioners court members during the citizen comments portion of the court’s Dec. 4 meeting.
The Flores’ home on Melody Lane in Val Verde County lies in the vicinity of an alternate route between the proposed site of a second international bridge being planned by the city of Del Rio and U.S. Highway 90.
County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. sent the city a letter in November proposing an alternate route between the planned site of the second bridge and U.S. Highway 90, which would intersect the highway near the intersection of U.S. 90 and Spur 349
northwest of Del Rio.
Kathy Flores introduced herself and her husband Segundo to the court on Wednesday and said they were present to speak about the item on the court’s agenda dealing with the proposed second international bridge.
She told the court, “We just want to document our opposition to your last proposed route.. . only because that would directly impact us. So that’s the only reason we’re here, is to document, to get this on record, that we’re against your proposal for that route.”
Several other residents of the Melody Lane area had expressed their opposition to Owens’ proposed route during a previous meeting of the court.
In his letter to the city, Owens attached a map showing the track of the proposed route, which lies farther west than the four routes previously proposed by RRP Consulting Engineers, the company the city has hired to design the bridge and lay out its connector
routes. The company was also hired to carry out the environmental and other studies needed for permitting and construction of the planned second bridge.
The route proposed by Owens would join U.S. Highway 90 near its intersection with Spur 349, which currently connects the highway with Amistad Dam.
The city has made no formal comment on Owens’ proposal, and the county judge addressed the second bridge on another agenda item during the court’s meeting on
Wednesday. (See separate story here.)
