Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) who recently won the congressional seat previously held by Will Hurd, was sworn in Sunday morning to the 117th Conngress.
The Constitution calls for Congress to convene on January 3 at noon ET — the reason for the rare Sunday session, according to CNN.
Gonzales defeated Del Rio native RAul Reyes by 7 votes in the Republican primary and went on to defeat Gina Ortiz Jones by 12,000 votes.
Gonzales released the following statement after being sworn in as the U.S. Representative for the 23rd Congressional District of Texas:
“My life is proof that the American dream is alive and well in this great country. I am honored that the 23rd District has put their trust in me to lead our community in Congress, and I promise to be a strong voice for Texas. Protecting the interests and conservative values of this region is an incredible responsibility, which I gladly accept.
Although our nation faces many challenges, I believe our best days are ahead. A united America is a powerful America, and I will work hard each day to promote the ideals that make our country a land of opportunity. I look forward to serving Texas’ 23rd District in Congress and achieving real, meaningful results for my constituents.”
