AUSTIN, Texas — Comstock’s Sebastian Talamantez placed second in the UIL Class 1A State Track and Field Championships on Saturday morning in Austin.

Talamantez earned silver in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:54.75, finishing four seconds behind state champion Ryker Haiala of Cumby Miller Grove and 14 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Brett Macias of Neches.

Talamantez, a junior who won a state title in cross country earlier this school year, will have two more chances at gold Saturday night. He is scheduled to compete in the 1,600-meter run and as part of Comstock’s first-ever state relay team in the 4×400-meter relay, alongside teammates Jerry Ibarra, Edgar Crane and Jordan Allen.

“We are going to be the dark horses tonight,” said Comstock track coach Lee Abbey. “But I think our kids are going to end up on the award stand.”

Abbey noted that Talamantez and Haiala have competed at the state level for the past two years. Talamantez won the state cross country title, while Haiala claimed Saturday’s 3,200-meter gold. The two will face off one last time in the 1,600-meter run.

“Haiala will be graduating this year, so maybe the two might compete again in college,” Abbey added.

The 830 Times will report results as they become available and publish a complete roundup of Comstock’s performances in Monday’s edition.
