Weather did what very few others had been able to do this year – stop Del Rio’s Isaac Diaz from achieving his goal on the golf course.

Diaz and the rest of the field at the Class 6A Boys State Golf Tournament saw their two-day tournament reduced to one thanks to poor weather conditions. The teams and individual players were able to play 18 holes on Monday but any chances to move up the leaderboard were washed away on day two.

Diaz finished tied for 13th overall with a 3-over 75. He was one of eight golfers to finish with that score.

Diaz’s tournament began Monday at 7:30 a.m. on the eighth hole at the White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown. He came out on fire, birdieing three of his first five holes.

He ran into trouble on the 13th hole, a par-4, 392-yard with an uphill lie and a narrow fairway. Diaz bogeyed the hole with a 5, and it was just the start of a rough stretch for the Del Rio junior. Diaz would bogey the next four holes as well to see the strokes he’d saved early on vanish just as quickly.

Diaz was able to par the next two holes before carding a birdy on the 519-yard par-5 hole No. 2. However, Diaz bogeyed two of his final five holes to finish the day 3-over.

Light rain and fog greeted the golfers Tuesday for day two of the tournament. Organizers tried to push back the start of the second day to 2 p.m., but thunderstorms late in the morning saturated the course and brought an early end to the event.

This was Diaz’s second consecutive trip to the state tournament. He finished last year’s tourney tied for 19th place overall.

Austin Westlake, whom Del Rio faced in the Region IV-6A tournament, took first place with a team score of 288. Houston Memorial was second with a 299, and Austin Lake Travis was third with a 300.

Conroe Grand Oaks’ Asher Vargas took first among all golfers with a 69. He was followed by Westlake’s Sterling Hurd, who shot a 70, and rounding out the medalists was Westlake’s Adam Villanueva, who finished with a 71.
