COMMENTARY — Donors create Val Verde Regional Medical Center Legacy Foundation

By Jane Morain/President,

VVRMC Legacy Foundation

As a 16-year past member of the Val Verde Regional Medical Center board of directors
and after attending a workshop on the importance of forming a foundation for the
hospital, I became aware of the need to establish a foundation.

I then discussed this with my husband, Gene Morain, and at that time, he pledged to give
$10,000 if the board would establish such a foundation. After many years of trying to get
one started, we were finally able to make this a reality.

The purpose of this foundation is a way to establish funds that can provide much-needed
services and equipment that the normal revenue for the hospital would not be able to
provide. The monies that will be raised can come from grants, endowments, fundraisers
and wills, et cetera.

These funds are separate from the hospital corporation and district and are overseen by
the foundation board. We have a small board now, but will be looking for interested
individuals to add to the board, persons who could work on helping with the growth of
the VVRMC Legacy Foundation.

The first major task of any foundation is to raise funds. In that regard, my husband Gene
Morain and I were finally able to fulfill that pledge. In March, I was so delighted to be
able to present this check in loving memory of Gene Morain and his amazing first wife,
Dr. Sacide Samadi Morain.

Gene loved this community and this hospital, and I can think of no better way to show
our support and love for Del Rio than to contribute to the health and wellbeing of our
community. It is my hope that this first contribution will synergize our community to get
involved in this most important endeavor.

I have since discovered that many individuals and businesses in our community have also
contributed to this worthy cause. Their names are listed on the VVRMC web site. Many
thanks to all of you.
