Molcajetes Restaurant, a popular local dining spot known for its authentic Mexican dishes, announced its closure Tuesday via social media.
In a post, owner Christian Mtanous said the decision to close was not driven by a lack of customers but by new business opportunities that will take him away from Del Rio.
“As I move forward to pursue new ventures that I have begun and goals that require my full time and dedication, I’ll also be moving away from Del Rio due to those ventures and will no longer be able to dedicate any more time or attention to the restaurant,” Mtanous wrote. “It was not an easy decision, but it’s one that feels right for the next chapter in my journey.”
When contacted by the 830 Times, Mtanous said his Facebook post fully reflected his thoughts on the closure.
Molcajetes originally opened in February 2019 at 808 Ave. G before relocating to 901 Veterans Blvd. earlier this year, celebrating a grand opening at the new site in April 2024.
In his post, Mtanous thanked customers and the community for six years of support, calling the experience “one filled with growth, community, friendship, and countless memories.”
“The restaurant was never something I originally planned, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” he wrote. “I’ve learned so much, met so many amazing people, and built relationships that I will always cherish.”
He closed his message with gratitude, adding that while this chapter has ended, “the story is far from over.”
