Man tosses beer, keeps coke, goes to jail

Press release from Del Rio Police Department

On October 16, 2025, at approximately 2:54 a.m., a Del Rio Police Department officer was patrolling the area of East Garza Street and Vitela Street when he observed a vehicle passing traffic on the wrong side of the roadway.

The officer activated the patrol unit’s emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop for the observed violation. The vehicle failed to yield, accelerating in an attempt to create distance and disregard police commands. During the pursuit, the driver discarded a brown bag out of the window before eventually coming to a stop.

The officer made contact with the driver, identified as Jose Angel Muñoz, 39 years of age. Additional officers responded and located the discarded brown bag at the intersection provided by the initiating officer. The bag contained a six-pack of beer, still cold to the touch.

Muñoz was detained, and a search of his person revealed a baggie containing a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. Muñoz was transported to the Del Rio Police Department for processing. A Computerized Criminal History check revealed a previous conviction for Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, enhancing the current charge.

Jose Angel Muñoz was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle – Previous Conviction, and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Penalty Group 1/1-B, less than 1 gram).
