Filing began Monday Jan. 12 for four seats on the Del Rio City Council, and by the end of the day, two
persons had filed applications for places on the ballot.

James “Jim” DeReus was the first person to file his application for a place on the city council
ballot.

DeReus is seeking the office of mayor of Del Rio. DeReus has served two terms as
Councilperson District 2, on the city council and currently serves as the council’s mayor pro-tem.

DeReus is a retired lieutenant colonel who served as a U.S. Air Force pilot and currently is
employed as a simulator instructor at Laughlin Air Force Base.

The second person to file on Monday was Alexandra Falcon Calderon. She is seeking the office
of Councilperson-At-Large, Place C.

Calderon served a single term as Councilperson, District 3, on the city council. Although she lost
her re-election bid to Randy Quinones two years ago, Calderon continues regularly attending city
council meetings, occasionally speaking to the council in the “Citizen Comments” portion of the
meetings.

Calderon is the owner of a small business, a hair salon called Classic Cuts, located in the city’s
historic downtown, which she has owned and operated since 1999. She continues to be active in
the Del Rio Downtown Association, a coalition she helped establish and which advocates for the
revitalization of the downtown’s economic area and improvement of quality of life and the
promotion of new and existing businesses. Calderon is also involved in several local
organizations and boards as a member and volunteer.

Filing for the open seats on the city council continues until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
