What do you do when Valentine’s Day and an owner’s birthday fall in the same weekend? You turn it into a Bridgerton-themed birthday party and Valentine’s Day celebration.

That’s what guests can expect Saturday at the historic Gin House Jazz Club at 900 Pecan Street, where owners Ely and Dr. Buddy Laing are hosting an all-day, free-admission celebration blending romance, flowers and festive fun in honor of Ely Laing’s 30th birthday. The event starts early with a morning market designed to showcase the venue in the light of day, opening with a backyard market with 18 vendors featuring mimosas at the bar and breakfast tacos from a food truck.

“It’s just really a mingle — eat breakfast, shop, sip,” Ely Laing said. “I think it’s going to be a really fun time to explore the grounds in the

daytime, because it is different,” compared to the venue’s usual evening setting of soft lights and fire pits across the grounds.

The Bridgerton theme grew out of Laing’s love of flowers, fashion and romance.

“I love flowers. I was born in the wrong time. I love dresses,” she said. “For me, it’s a time to wear a fabulous dress and deck out with flowers.”

She added that her co-owner and husband may be putting even more effort into his costume.

“Yes, Buddy has gone all out,” she said. “He’s decking out more than I am.”

Dr. Buddy Laing standing nearby laughed as he described his outfit. “I’ve got big ruffles,” he said.

Ely Laing joked that he is simply happy to dress up. “I think he’s just excited he doesn’t have to wear scrubs,” she said.

The couple emphasized that costumes are optional.

“We really want people to just come and enjoy,” Ely Laing said. “We’d love it if people came out in costume, but just come out and enjoy everything. We’re going to have flowers all over. It’s going to be beautiful.”

Dr. Aurelio “Buddy” Laing III, a co-owner said he has been surprised by the response. “So many people have told us they’re working on their costumes. We’re really excited,” he said.

A floral arch will serve as a photo backdrop, and a photographer will be on site from 5 to 7 p.m. to capture images of guests celebrating with the birthday honoree.

The celebration will also feature raffle prizes: a $100 gift card for first place, a $50 gift card to the Gin House Jazz Club for second place and a themed gift basket with a tote bag, hats and chocolates for third.

“My biggest gift for me is giving. I love the gift of giving,” Ely said. “I wanted an excuse to give.”

Buddy is excited about the complimentary cupcakes that will be available to all attendees.

“Everybody’s welcome,” Ely Laing said. “You don’t have to dress up. Just come have a good time.”
