Two drivers were arrested Saturday night after officers allegedly observed them racing at high speed on a city roadway.
At approximately 10:25 p.m. March 14, a Del Rio Police Department officer patrolling near East Gibbs Street and North Bedell Avenue heard
the sound of a vehicle rapidly accelerating, according to police.
The officer observed a white Dodge Charger traveling eastbound in the 1500 block of East U.S. Highway 90 gaining speed and began following the vehicle in an attempt to determine its speed using radar.
While monitoring the vehicle, the officer observed the Charger engaged in what police described as an acceleration contest with a red Ford Mustang, with both vehicles attempting to outdistance one another.
An additional officer in the area obtained radar readings indicating both vehicles were traveling at speeds exceeding 95 miles per hour, police said.
Officers conducted traffic stops on both vehicles and took the drivers into custody. Police identified the drivers as Anthony Isaiah San Miguel, 18, and Aiden Luis Mireles, 17. Both were charged with racing on a highway.
The white Dodge Charger and the red Ford Mustang were towed from the scene.
San Miguel and Mireles were transported to the Del Rio Police Department where they were booked on the charge. They were later released
to the custody of the GEO Correctional Facility pending the magistration process.
The Del Rio Police Department reminds motorists that racing on public roadways is illegal and extremely dangerous, placing drivers, passengers and the public at significant risk.
