Del Rio High School senior Kailyn Lomas will be graduating as the most decorated female student athlete of all time.
Lomas recently won her third consecutive state championship in girls powerlifting, taking the top spot at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting State Meet March 18 in Edinburg.
Competing in the 105-pound weight class, Lomas lifted a total of 865 pounds combined in the squat, bench press and deadlift. Her squat of 365 pounds set a new state record in her weight class as well.
This was her second state title in the 105-pound division. She won state last year in the 97-pound weight class. Last year she also set the state record in her division with a 350-pound squat and set Class 6A records in the deadlift (315 pounds) and overall weight (800 pounds).
She was a four-time state qualifier, winning three titles along the way.
Junior Gabby Diaz was the state runner-up last year in the 114-pound weight class. This year, she was second to no one as she won the state title at 114, bringing home an armful of honors in the process.
Diaz won the state crown with a total weight lifted of 965 pounds. She set the state record in the squat with 385 pounds and in the deadlift with 365 pounds. She also captured the award for Best Lightweight Deadlift. The squat total was a 30-pound improvement from last year and the deadlift total was a 65-pound improvement.
Not to be outdone, junior Aniah Gonzales also captured the state title in the 97-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 730 pounds.
According to Del Rio High head powerlifting coach David Gomez Jr., no other school at the meet had three state champions. As a team, Del Rio finished third in the state.
Five girls represented Del Rio at the state meet. Joining Diaz, Gonzales and Lomas were junior Leslie Paredes, who was seventh in the 181-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 930 pounds; and sophomore Elma Ramirez, who finished eighth in the 198-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 930 pounds.
