It’s becoming obvious the Del Rio Queens volleyball team doesn’t care much for the health of its fans, especially those with weak hearts.
For the second time in four days, the Queens battled into a fifth set in District 30-6A action — the volleyball equivalent of overtime. This
time, they finished the job.
Del Rio held off United South, 3-2, Tuesday night at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium to earn its first district victory of the season.
The win ended a 326-day district drought dating back to Del Rio’s 3-1 victory over Eagle Pass on Oct. 24, 2025.
The Queens improved to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in district play, placing them in a six-way tie for the final two playoff spots.
There is still plenty of volleyball to be played. Del Rio is only three matches into its 14-match district schedule and has 11 remaining.
One thing setting this Queens team apart is its fight.
“They never stop fighting,” Queens head coach Veronica Rivera said.
That has been obvious during the past two matches.
On Tuesday, the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium was rocking as the Queens fought off visiting United South, winning 25-19, 25-22, 16-
25, 21-25, 15-11.
Del Rio appeared headed toward a sweep after taking the first two sets, but United South refused to go quietly. The Lady Panthers won the next two sets to force a decisive fifth.
The Queens regained control when it mattered most, winning the final set 15-11 and sending the home crowd away happy — and finally able to breathe.
The victory came three days after Del Rio nearly completed a dramatic comeback at Laredo LBJ.
After dropping the first two sets Saturday, the Queens rallied to win the next two and then fought back late in the fifth before falling, 3-2. LBJ won the match 25-15, 25-20, 25-27, 17-25, 15-13.
Del Rio will return to action Friday when the Queens travel to Von Ormy to face Southwest Legacy at 7 p.m. Both teams enter the match with 1-2 district records. One thing is certain, afterwards, they can be atop the logjam for the playoff spot, or playing catch up.
