The Del Rio High School swimming team finished second overall Monday in a tri-meet against Laredo LBJ and Laredo United South.
Del Rio won six events during the Sept. 22 meet, including both boys relay races.
“Coach (Ernesto) Peña (assistant coach) and I are extremely proud of the team,” Del Rio head coach Dariela Gallegos said. “This was our first meet of the season, and we have a few swimmers who are new not only to the team but also to competitive swimming.
“The hard work at practice is paying off for both our newcomers and veterans, and we plan to continue pushing and improving throughout the season.”
Joaquin Arredondo, Tiago Gallegos, Arturo Lopez and Harrison Stell won the boys 200-yard medley relay. Lopez, Gallegos, Arredondo and Stell also teamed up to win the boys 200-yard freestyle relay.
Edward Estrada won the boys 200-yard freestyle, followed by Orlin Smith in sixth place and Emilio Sotelo in seventh.
Lopez won the boys 100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Gallegos added another victory in the boys 100-yard breaststroke, with Jack Fooshee finishing third.
Gallegos also placed third in the boys 500-yard freestyle, followed by Arredondo in fourth and Stell in fifth.
Arredondo finished second in the boys 100-yard backstroke. Smith placed third, Estrada fourth, Sotelo sixth and Dominic Servin eighth.
Stell led Del Rio in the boys 50-yard freestyle with a third-place finish. Fooshee was fourth, Jacob Danley ninth, Sotelo 11th, Maynard Gonzalez 14th and Servin 20th.
Gonzalez placed fourth in the boys 100-yard freestyle, followed by Sotelo in fifth, Danley in seventh and Servin in 11th.
The Del Rio girls placed second in both relay events. Kaylee Veliz, Theresa Webb, Avery Leverett and Sophia Cardenas competed in the 200-yard medley relay, while Leverett, Isabella Franco, Veliz and Cardenas formed the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Cardenas placed second in the girls 500-yard freestyle and third in the 50-yard freestyle. Leverett finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Veliz placed second in the girls 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. Franco finished third in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke.
Webb placed fourth in the girls 200-yard freestyle and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle. Liana Veliz was eighth in the 100-yard freestyle and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle.
