Brackettville picked up its first win Friday night when the Brackett Tigers defeated the Sabinal Yellowjackets 18-14 in Sabinal.
The win snapped a four-game non-district losing streak and moved the Tigers into a tie with Junction atop the District 14-2A Division II standings. Brackett improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in district; Sabinal fell to 2-3 and 0-1.
Quarterback Jack Lewis completed 11 of 18 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Trent Sandoval caught one of those passes for a 68-yard touchdown. Caleb Cortes led the Tigers on the ground with 67 yards on five carries.
Brackett had shown it could compete during its winless start, including a 37-28 loss to Eldorado on Sept. 4. The Tigers entered Friday’s game coming off a 42-20 loss to Falls City.
Brackett will host Junction at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Both teams are 1-0 in district play, making the matchup an early test for the district lead.
