SPORTS — Queens win, Rams fall in shootout

It took a pandemic and a once in a lifetime winter storm, but the Del Rio High soccer teams finally returned to action this week.

Both the Rams and Queens opened play in District 30-6A this week with strong showings. The Rams battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation against Laredo United only to fall in penalty kicks while the Queens stopped Laredo LBJ, 2-1.

Both teams will again be in action in front of the home fans Saturday as part of a soccer doubleheader. The Rams will face Laredo LBJ at 11 a.m. while the Queens will face Laredo Nixon at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.

Rams 2, Laredo United 2

Tuesday night saw the Rams and Longhorns battle to a tough 2-2 draw that was decided in a shootout.

After a scoreless first half, the Rams rallied to tie the Longhorns thanks to goals from Donny Lewis and Daniel Garcia. Garcia’s blast came from outside the box at the buzzer to send the match to a shootout.

The Rams eventually fell 8-7 in the shootout. Christian Perez, Emmanuel Vela, Lewis, Luis Estrada, Angel Aldrete, Ely Losoya and Noe Trujillo were all successful in their attempts.

 

Queens 2, Laredo LBJ 1

Wednesday night, it was the ladies’ turn on the pitch as the Queens rallied to defeat LBJ.

After being down 1-0 at the half, the Queens came back thanks to a goal from Ema Rojas and a successful penalty kick by Cassandra Ochoa. Rojas’ goal came from about 20 yards out.
