What began as routine yard work quickly turned into a dangerous situation on West Garza Street after a man using a weed eater unknowingly disturbed a beehive.
Del Rio Police Department officers responded and helped move the man to safety as bees continued to sting. During the rescue, three officers were stung multiple times while working to get him out of harm’s way.
The man, who had also suffered multiple bee stings, was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Garza Street was temporarily closed between Arteaga and Broadbent streets to keep others away while emergency personnel addressed the hazard.
Del Rio Fire Department personnel established a safety perimeter, located the hive and took action to eliminate the bee hazard. Their work helped protect nearby residents, passing motorists and those responding to the scene.
Emergency calls can take many forms, and this one brought an unexpected danger to both the man needing help and the officers assisting him.
Garza Street has reopened to traffic.
Thank you to the community for your patience during the temporary closure.
