Queens finish second in season’s first track meet

It took a few delays, but the 2021 track and field season at Del Rio High School is underway.

The Rams and Queens returned to action Thursday when Del Rio High School hosted the annual Queen City Relays track and field meet. Six teams took part including host Del Rio, Laredo United, Laredo Alexander, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn and Uvalde.

On the girls’ side, Laredo Alexander won with 195 points while Del Rio was second with 148 points.

Schools earned points if their athletes or teams finished in the top six of each event. Del Rio’s results in each event are as follows:

3,200-Meter Run

Del Rio took two of the top six spots in the 3,200 meters. Ozlynn Urias won the event in 12:12.98. Teammate Mackenzie Pulliam was sixth in 13:53.10.

Skylar Urias finished seventh in 14:33.41.

 

400-Meter Relay

Del Rio took fourth in a time of 55.33. Uvalde won the event in 51.07.

The Queens’ team consisted of Myla Tabora, Sydney Ballard, Ariana Aguilar and Eliana Rodriguez.

 

800 Meters

Kimberly Gloria was Del Rio’s top finisher in the 800 meters, taking third in 2:32.74.

Cinthia Rubio was seventh in 2:55.80, and Skylar Urias was 10th in 3:06.66.

Isabella Gonzalez of Laredo Alexander won the event in 2:29.90.

 

100-Meter Hurdles

Del Rio’s Sabrina Williams won the event in 16.22. Teammate Emily Torres was sixth in 19.31.

Alyssa Torres was 11th in 26.15.

 

100 Meters

Tabora was Del Rio’s top finisher in the 100 meters, taking second in 13.90 seconds. Teammate Ariana Erickson was fourth in 14.06, and Mia Ortiz was 10th in 14.62.

Uvalde’s Alexa Luna won the event in 13.23.

 

800-Meter Relay

Del Rio’s team took third in the 800 meters in 1:56.82. The team included Ballard, Celeste Montes, Ortiz and Rodriguez.

Uvalde won the event in 1:51.60.

 

400 Meters

Del Rio’s top finisher in the 400 meters was Luz Guerra, who was eighth in 1:09.43. Cecilia Martinez was 12th in 1:14.97, and Karen Palacios was 13th in 1:15.08.

Laredo United’s Natalia Suarez won the event in 1:03.72.

 

300-Meter Hurdles

Williams swept the hurdles for Del Rio, winning the 300-meter event in 50.70 seconds, nearly three seconds faster than the runner-up, teammate Torres, who crossed the line at 53.31.

 

200 Meters

Erickson finished second for Del Rio, crossing the finish line in 28.81 seconds.

Montes was eighth in 30.02, and Selenee Rangel was 10th in 30.53.

Uvalde’s Briana Crow won the event in 28.27 seconds.

 

1,600 Meters

Ozlynn Urias swept the long distance races for Del Rio, winning the 1,600 meters in 5:38.13.

Gloria was fourth in 5:52.37, and Pulliam was seventh in 6:30.75.

 

1,600-Meter Relay

Del Rio was fourth in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:39. The team consisted of Erickson, Alyssa Torres, Emily Torres and Williams.

Laredo Alexander won the event in 4:22.49.

 

Discus

Paige Everett was Del Rio’s top finisher in the discus, taking eighth with a throw of 91 feet, 11 inches.

Winn’s Angela Sanchez won with a throw of 109 feet, 7.5 inches.

 

High Jump

Ballard won the gold medal in the high jump after clearing the bar at 4 feet, 8 inches.

Erickson tied for third after clearing 4 feet, 4 inches.

 

Long Jump

Tabora was Del Rio’s top finisher in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 9 inches to take fourth.

Laredo Alexander’s Elizabeth Gallardo won the event with a distance of 15 feet, 11 inches.

 

Pole Vault

Syann Casillas was fifth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 7 feet in fewer attempts than teammate Carolina Sanchez, who also cleared 7 feet and finished sixth.

Alexander’s Isabella Gonzalez won the event after clearing 10 feet.

 

Shot Put

Emily Castro was third in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 10 inches. Everett was fifth at 29 feet, 2 inches, and America Ovalle was 12th with a throw of 24 feet, 7.5 inches.

Eagle Pass’ Isabella Morin won the event with a throw of 36 feet, 1 inch.

 

Triple Jump

Ballard took first in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 4.5 inches.

Aguilar was sixth at 30 feet, 11.5 inches, and Rodriguez was seventh at 30 feet, 4 inches.
