SPORTS — Queens notch double digit soccer win

By Brian Argabright

It was only a matter of time before the Queens soccer team got on one of its classic double-digit win streaks.

That time is now.

The Queens are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches and have 12 straight wins overall as the Queens took down Laredo LBJ and Laredo Nixon over the weekend.

Del Rio played back-to-back matches to help the team catch up on its district schedule after they started later than their 30-6A counterparts due to a San Felipe Del Rio CISD-mandated suspension of UIL activities and a winter storm that shut down the city for a week.

The Queens will be playing three matches a week for the near future, leading assistant coach Beatriz Lerma to compare the Queens season to a tournament each week.

Del Rio defeated Laredo LBJ, 5-1, Friday night in Laredo. It was the second time in three days the two teams met and that experience helped the Queens.

“We were up 1-0 in the first half. LBJ, as always, was physical, but since we had played them on Wednesday we knew how to make adjustments,” Queens head soccer coach Wilber Rivas said. “In the second half we came out stronger and the team seemed to start passing and finding a rhythm. Our passing lanes were better and we started communicating better.”

Jadyn Casillas scored a pair of goals while Cassandra Ochoa, Laurie Ignacio and Alondra Sanchez each scored once.

Saturday, the Queens returned to action when they welcomed the Laredo Nixon Lady Mustangs to Walter Levermann Ram Stadium and sent them home with a 5-0 loss.

The Queens grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals from Ema Rojas and Casilas.

Del Rio continued to press its advantage in the second half.

Casillas scored her second goal of the match when she followed up on an Ochoa shot and sent the loose ball past the Nixon goalie for a 3-0 lead.

As Rivas began to substitute his players to give his bench a chance at minutes, the Queens found more players with scoring opportunities.

Andrea Sauceda scored on a give and go midway through the second half, and then Gisselle Castañeda capped the scoring when she beat the goalie one-on-one and put the Queens’ fifth and final goal on the scoreboard.

The Queens will be back on the pitch Tuesday when they host the Laredo United Lady Longhorns at 6 p.m.
