With five matches left in the regular season, the Del Rio Rams soccer team is right in the thick of the playoff hunt.

After seven matches, the Rams have 13 points thanks to three wins, three draws and one shootout win. Teams in 30-6A are awarded three points for each win, one point for a draw and an extra point should they win the shootout in those draws.

Already this week, the Rams have a win and a shootout win to pick up four big points and move into third place.

Monday the Rams battled to a 2-2 draw with Laredo Alexander. Del Rio got goals from Ely Losoya, off an assist from Angel Aldrete, and Aldrete himself.

In the shootout, Del Rio prevailed 5-4. Aldrete, Emmanuel Vela, Luis Estrada, Donny Lewis and Austin Ramirez were each successful on their tries.

Wednesday night, the Rams traveled to Laredo for their second match against Alexander. This time no shootout was necessary as the Rams won in regulation, 4-3.

Down 2-1 at halftime, the Rams rallied to score three goals in the second half including the eventual game-winner by Vela with about two minutes left to play.

Vela had three goals on the evening while Aldrete had the other goal.

Laredo United sits in first place in the district standings with 22 points (5 wins, 4 draws). Alexander is in second place with 16 points (5 wins, 1 draw). Del Rio is third followed by Laredo United South with 11 points (3 wins, 1 draw).

Del Rio has fewer matches played due to beginning district competition late due to San Felipe Del Rio CISD suspending UIL activities out of precaution regarding COVID-19.
