It was an up and down week for the Del Rio Queens soccer team.
The team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Laredo Alexander Tuesday. The Queens then suffered a second straight loss Wednesday, again to Alexander, this time in Laredo by a score of 3-1.
The lone goal in the loss came off a penalty kick by Cassandra Ochoa.
“It was a tough game,” Queens head coach Wilber Rivas said. “We are solidly in second place and will need to win our last four games. We’ll be looking to bounce back against United South.”
Bounce back they did as the Queens took down the Laredo United South Lady Panthers, 2-1, thanks to a pair of goals from Ema Rojas.
Del Rio has three matches left in the regular season and currently has 21 points. They trail Alexander by five points, but Alexander has the head-to-head tiebreaker as they swept the season series.
Laredo United has 21 points (7-2 in district), but Del Rio swept United in their two meetings this season and has the tiebreaker there.
Fourth place currently belongs to Laredo Nixon with nine points (3-6 in district), but they are being stalked by Laredo United South (six points) and Eagle Pass (six points).
Though the Queens have already secured a playoff spot, the quest for a district title continues but they’ll need help. Del Rio has a rematch against United South Monday at 6 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. The Queens will then finish the regular season with a pair of matches against Eagle Pass. They’ll play the Lady Eagles first on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Ram Stadium, and then will travel to Eagle Pass Monday, March 22, for the regular season finale at Eagle Pass at 6:30 p.m.
