Del Rio is looking for a strong finish to the regular season as the boys soccer playoffs loom.
Having already been assured of a playoff spot, the Rams are now looking to improve their positioning. They helped themselves in a big way Monday afternoon as they shutout Eagle Pass, 5-0, in Eagle Pass.
Luis Estrada, Noe Trujillo, Emmanuel Vela, Angel Aldrete and Christian Perez each had goals for the Rams. Vela and Aldrete also had assists in the match.
Del Rio trails Laredo Alexander by three points for the second seed in District 30-6A. Alexander won 4-1 Monday night over Laredo LBJ. The Rams have played one fewer match than Alexander, so that No. 2 seed may not be decided until the final day of the regular season.
Del Rio is also trying to hold off Laredo United South, which trails Del Rio by two points in the standings. Del Rio won the first meeting between the two, 1-0, on March 12. Vela had the sole goal in that contest.
The Rams’ win was just the start of a busy week for the Rams soccer program. Due to the delay in the start of district play caused by a suspension of UIL activities by the San Felipe Del Rio CISD out of precaution regarding COVID-19, the Rams are forced to play four matches in the next five days to close out the regular season.
Del Rio played Eagle Pass Monday. Wednesday, they’ll travel to Laredo to face United South in a makeup game. Thursday, it’s back to Laredo to take on LBJ in another makeup game.
The Rams will then close out the regular season Saturday in front of the home fans at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium as they take on Eagle Pass at 11 a.m.
