It all comes down to the final match of the season.
When this week began, the Del Rio Rams soccer team found themselves in third place. The team had already clinched a playoff spot, but was looking to at least improve their position in the standings.
Standing in front of the Rams were Laredo Alexander and Laredo United. Even worse, the Rams had to play four matches in five games after a temporary suspension of play forced Del Rio to start the district season later than all the other teams in 30-6A.
But then came a 5-0 win over Eagle Pass on Monday. Thursday, the Rams beat Laredo United South, 2-1, thanks to goals by Luis Estrada and Angel Aldrete, who also added an assist.
The winning didn’t stop there as the Rams defeated Laredo LBJ Friday night, 3-1, thanks to goals from Estrada, Aldrete and Noe Trujillo and assist from Aldrete and Roberto Garza.
Those three wins gave the Rams 25 points on the season. And with those 25 points, they’ve pulled into a tie with Alexander and United for first place.
All three teams will be in action Saturday with seeding on the line and a district championship hanging in the balance.
Alexander and United will play each other while the Rams close out their regular season at 11 a.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium against Eagle Pass.
Del Rio fans will be cheering on their Rams, but they should also show some love to Alexander. If Alexander beats United, and the Rams beat Eagle Pass, then Del Rio and Alexander would be co-district champions and the Rams would earn the No. 1 seed by way of beating Alexander head-to-head.
If United beats Alexander, and Del Rio beats Eagle Pass, then Del Rio and United would be co-district champions but United would get the No. 1 seed by way of having beaten Del Rio head-to-head.
If Alexander and United tie at the end of regulation, and Del Rio wins, Del Rio would claim the district title outright and the No. 1 seed.
If Del Rio loses to Eagle Pass, and Alexander wins, the Rams would fall to the No. 3 seed and United would be second. If Del Rio loses, and United wins, the Rams would fall to the No. 2 seed.
