One half was all that remained for Del Rio to advance to the second round of the girls soccer playoffs, but Taft had other plans.
The Lady Raiders rallied to score a pair of second half goals and bring an end to the Queens’ season, 2-1, in the Class 6A, Region IV Bi-District round Thursday night at Dub Farris Stadium in San Antonio.
Del Rio finishes the season 11-3. Taft advances to face either Brownsville Vela or Harlingen South in the Area round.
The Queens took the lead in the first half off a goal from Ema Rojas. They carried that 1-0 lead into halftime, but the second half was a different story.
“They started attacking us and we would counter, but they caught us flat footed on a wall pass and tied the game about seven minutes into the second half,” Queens head coach Wilber Rivas said.
Taft didn’t let up and continued to attack. The Lady Raiders broke through for the eventual game-winner with a header off a corner kick.
“It was a great game. The Queens left it all on the field. We, the coaches, are very proud of them,” Rivas said.
Del Rio finished the regular season as the number two seed in District 30-6A after going 10-2. They’re only losses were to eventual district champions Laredo Alexander.
In other District 30-6A action, Alexander defeated San Antonio John Jay, 1-0, and Laredo United, the district’s number three seed, lost to San Antonio Brennan, 4-0. Laredo Nixon, the district’s number four seed, plays Friday.
