Despite a season that saw the team sidelined by not only a school district-mandated suspension of play but the temporary closure of their home course, the Del Rio Queens golf team is extending its season at least a few more weeks.
The Queens finished second at the District 20-6A Girls Golf Tournament Friday afternoon to advance to the Class 6A, Region IV Girls Golf Tournament April 19-20 at the Palm View Golf Course in McAllen.
The two-day tournament wrapped up at the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course in Laredo Friday with Laredo Alexander winning the district championship and the Queens taking second. Eagle Pass finished third and will serve as the alternates for the regional tournament.
Alexander shot 733 as a team while the Queens shot an 807. Eagle Pass shot an 824.
Laredo United South (857) was fourth and Laredo LBJ (894) was fifth. Laredo United and Laredo Nixon did not field teams but were represented at the tournament by individual golfers.
Del Rio’s top golfer was Mia Grace Paredes. Paredes shot a two-day 178 (91, 87) to lead her team and finish fourth overall.
Joining Paredes were Leanna Galindo (187 – 96, 91), Lorena Torres (199 – 103, 96) and Joelda Alcaraz (243 – 125, 118).
Individually, Alexander’s Catherine Flores won the district championship with a two-day 159 (79, 80). United’s Marttina Portillo was second with a 170 (85, 86) and fellow Lady Longhorn Tania Gonzalez was third with a 177 (86, 91). Paredes was fourth followed by Alexander’s Zaida Gonzalez, who shot a 181 (94, 87).
Portillo and Gonzalez will also compete at the regional tournament after qualifying as individuals.
