NEWS – City issues statement on officer-involved shooting

Report on Del Rio Police Department-Involved Shooting
The city has issued a public statement on a Del Rio Police Department-involved shooting that took place Sunday morning.

 

Del Rio, TX – On April 11th, 2021 at approximately 0826 hours, the Emergency  Communication Division of the Del Rio Police Department received a call for service at the 400  Block of W. Gutierrez Street. The caller reported a female was at the residence and had a weapon  in her possession. 

Officers were immediately dispatched to the residence. The caller further reported the female  attempted to remove an item from her yard without consent. The female further attempted to force  entry into the caller’s residence but was pushed away by the caller’s son. 

The female left the area towards Gillis Avenue. Officers were updated with the possible location  and clothing description of the female. Officers arrived and made contact with the caller who  provided further details of the incident.  

At approximately 0831 hours officers encountered the female in armed confrontation. At 0832  hours, officers called out via radio, shots fired requesting ambulance and Fire Department services.  The situation escalated quickly, all threats to nearby residents were immediately contained and no  need for further public alarm was needed.  

Medical assistance arrived shortly and transported the female to Val Verde Regional Medical Center  where she is being treated. Officers involved were not injured.  

Preliminary information revealed the female was carrying what appeared to be a rifle- type weapon  and was uncooperative with officers upon their contact.  

Officers searched the area for unrelated injuries to other civilians and /or damages to property to  nearby residents. None were located nor reported.  

An Internal Affairs Investigation will commence as it is the mandatory process for all officer involved  shooting incidents. The Del Rio Police Department Criminal Division will be handling the criminal  investigation. The officer involved shooting incident has been turned over to the Local DPS Texas  Rangers for further investigation.
