“Captain” Jack Mayfield is back in the major leagues.
According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Angels recalled Del Rio’s Mayfield back to the main roster Monday afternoon. Mayfield was optioned to Triple-A Utah in March.
The move was made to shore up the infielding corps after third baseman Anthony Rendon was put on the 10-day injured list due to a strained groin.
Mayfield, wearing 59 now, made his Angels debut Monday in the top of the eighth inning, pinch running for Albert Pujols after he had singled. Mayfield stayed in the game, playing third base.
The Angels will play the Kansas City Royals today at 7:10 p.m. in the second of a three-game series.
Mayfield, who was acquired by the Angels from the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations, can play second base, shortstop and third base. He played all three positions during his time with the Houston Astros organization. He was with the organization from 2013 until 2020.
Mayfield played four years for the Del Rio High School Rams baseball team, earning all-district honors each of those years, before graduating in 2009. He went onto play for the University of Oklahoma where he earned all-conference recognition. He also pitched in the College World Series. He signed as a free agent with the Houston Astros in 2013.
