Del Rio has its first two regional qualifiers in track and field.
Senior Ozlynn Urias won the Area track and field championship in the 3,200 meters Thursday morning at the Student Activity Center in Laredo. She won the event in a time of 11:50.60.
Teammate Kimberly Gloria, a sophomore, finished fourth in a time of 12:30.05.
The Area meet continues throughout Thursday. The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 6A, Region IV Track and Field Meet at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
Urias competed at the regional meet in 2019, finishing sixth. The 2020 meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will be Gloria’s first trip to the regional meet.
Urias has had a standout year when it comes to long distance running. She qualified for the state cross-country meet for the third time in her high school career in November, finishing 48th overall in the race.
Her running career, which began when she was five years old with a traveling team known as the Roadrunners, will continue at the collegiate level. She has committed to compete for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
