The woman involved in a Del Rio Police Department shooting over the weekend has died.

Crystal Jean Alcozer, 34, was identified as the woman who was shot by officers during an incident that occurred Sunday morning in the San Felipe neighborhood of Del Rio. Ranger Roger Dixon of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Rangers confirmed Alcozer’s identity during an interview with the 830 Times Thursday.

Dixon said he was asked by Del Rio Police Department Chief Fred Knoll Jr., to investigate the fatal shooting.

Alcozer, a resident of Del Rio, was shot by police after officers were called to a residence in the 400 block of West Gutierrez Street. Residents there told police a woman carrying a weapon tried to take an item from their yard and then tried to force her way into the house.

When police arrived at the Gutierrez Street residence, the woman had left, walking toward Gillis Avenue.

Police located the woman and “encountered the female in armed confrontation,” according to a press release issued by the city of Del Rio Sunday afternoon regarding the shooting.

Dixon confirmed Alcozer died as the result of injuries sustained in the shooting.

The city’s press release explained that an internal affairs investigation would commence as is mandatory in all officer-involved shooting incidents, and that the Del Rio Police Department’s Criminal Division would handle the criminal investigation.

The release also confirmed that the shooting incident had been turned over to the local DPS Texas Rangers for further investigation.

Thursday afternoon the city issued a second release regarding the shooting. It reiterated that the Rangers had taken over the investigation and added that the agency would also be the point of contact for media/public information inquiries. The release came about due to the numerous requests for information being made of the city regarding the shooting.

“The Del Rio Police Department also continues an internal affairs investigation of the event. Under Civil Service Regulations, the Del Rio Police Department cannot comment on internal affairs investigations,” the release stated.
