The track and field season will continue for many of Del Rio High School’s student-athletes.
Thirteen members of the Del Rio Rams and Queens track and field teams qualified for the Class 6A, Region IV Track and Field Meet after finishing among the top four in their respective events at Thursday’s Area meet held at the Student Activity Center in Laredo.
Leading the way is senior Ozlynn Urias. Urias, and teammate Kimberly Gloria, were the first Del Rio athletes to qualify for regionals as they finished among the top four in the 3,200 meters. Urias won the event in 11:50.59 while Gloria was fourth in 12:30.04.
But Urias wasn’t finished. She later won the 1,600-meter race in 5:27.94, making her a dual Area champion.
Gloria would also be a dual Area qualifier, finishing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:27.89.
Senior Sabrina Williams qualified for the regional meet in three separate events. She won the Area title in the 100-meter hurdles in a blistering time of 14.94 seconds. She also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.49 seconds, missing out on first place by just .34 seconds to Brianna Hinds of San Antonio Marshall.
Williams was also part of the 400-meter relay team, along with Myla Tabora, Alixta Blanco and Ariana Erickson, which finished fourth in 50.54 seconds.
Erickson also qualified for Area in the 200 meters, as she was second in 26.60 seconds.
On the boys’ side, Diego Piña was the top qualifier for the Rams as he finished second in the discus with a throw of 161 feet, 1 inch. He’ll be joined at regionals by his fellow thrower Noe Rodriguez, who was fourth in the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 9 inches.
The Rams’ 800-meter relay team is also headed to regionals after taking third at Area in a time of 1:31.97. The team includes Aiden Huerta, Luis Pablo Galaviz, Juan Peralta and Zachary Taylor.
Rounding out the boys’ qualifiers for Del Rio is Joe Chavez, who earned a trip to regionals by finishing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:03.53. He just beat out Elijah Hernandez of Harlan for that fourth and final qualifying spot by .02 seconds.
Del Rio had several of its student-athletes finish in the top six overall, earning points for the Rams and Queens.
On the girls’ side, Erickson was fifth in the 100 meters in 13.13 seconds. She missed qualifying for regionals in the event by .12 seconds. Tabora was sixth in 13.17 seconds.
Emily Torres was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.36 seconds.
On the boys’ side, Nathan Reyes finished fifth in the 400 meters in 42.44 seconds, missing out on qualifying for regionals by .40 seconds.
Jacob Coronado was fifth in the 1,600 meters in 4:40.63.
The 1,600-meter relay team of Miguel Gonzalez, Reyes, Chavez and Galaviz was fifth in 3:32.18.
Taylor was sixth in the 200 meters in 23.67 seconds.
The Class 6A, Region IV Track and Field Meet will be held April 23-24 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
As a team, the Queens finished fifth overall with 66 points. San Antonio Harlan was first with 100 points.
The Rams finished seventh overall with 37 points. Harlan was first with 99 points.
