So you’re saying there’s a chance?
After the Del Rio Queens softball team lost its regular season finale to the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles, it looked like Del Rio’s chances at a playoff appearance were on life support as the team’s final option was a win by Laredo United over Laredo Alexander in the district’s final regular season game Wednesday night.
After all, if United won then Del Rio and Alexander would finish the season tied for the district’s fourth seed and a play-in game would be necessary to determine who would claim that spot.
Del Rio’s hopes and prayers were answered as United dispatched Alexander, 11-8, to claim the district No. 3 seed and send Alexander to the play-in game.
San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Ric Smith announced Thursday morning that the play-in game would be held Monday, April 26, at the San Antonio ISD Sports Complex at 5 p.m. Alexander is the home team, but no ticket information or stadium guidelines had been announced as of early Thursday afternoon.
Queens Softball Head Coach Arnulfo “Nufie” Rodriguez said his message to the team was a simple one. “The Queens are still alive! Seize and embrace the opportunity that is right in front of you,” Rodriguez said.
The Queens and Lady Bulldogs split their regular season series with each team winning at home. Alexander beat Del Rio 6-0 in Laredo March 17, but Del Rio returned the favor April 13 as they won a slugfest at the Queens Softball Field, 19-13.
Del Rio has won three of its last four games while Alexander has lost its last four games.
The game between Del Rio and Alexander won’t be the only extra game in District 30-6A. Eagle Pass and Laredo LBJ will meet Saturday at the San Antonio ISD Sports Complex at noon to determine the district’s top two seeds. Both teams finished the regular season tied at 10-2 and each had a win over the other. Though they will share the district championship, the winner of Saturday’s game will be the district’s No. 1 seed and the loser will be the No. 2 seed.
