Rosemary Gutierrez is inviting the community to her home in San Felipe Monday to help her commemorate a day she can’t forget.
Monday – April 26 – is the day Gutierrez’s youngest daughter, Amanda Riojas, was shot in the head while she was inside a pickup truck parked outside a convenience store on Dr. Fermin Calderon Boulevard in south Del Rio.
Riojas was taken to the emergency room at Val Verde Regional Medical Center, where she later died as a result of her injuries.
April 26, 2021, is the second anniversary of Riojas’ murder.
“It’s important for me to do this, because I want to make this day a tradition and do it every year. It’s not just for me, it’s a healing process for the whole family,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez said she also wants to raise community awareness about domestic and dating violence and murders of women.
“This was my daughter, and she didn’t deserve to be murdered like she was,” Gutierrez said.
Monday’s candlelight vigil will be held outside Gutierrez’s home at 106 W. Chapoy St. and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Gutierrez asked that those attending wear masks.
