Things were hopping at Del Rio’s HEB Wednesday morning when Texas Department of Public Safety Officers chased a driver into the parking lot.
The officers chased the driver and 9 undocumented riders into the HEB parking lot.
Before getting to the parking lot, he’d already hit a DRPD vehicle, according to Fred Knoll, Del Rio Chief of Police.
“DPS is filing charges for aggravated assault for attempting to strike our officers as well as theirs,” said Knoll.
There were a number of PD and DPS officers involved in the chase, along with a DPS helicopter that was keeping a close eye on the chase from above.
DPS troopers can be heard telling dispatchers that the driver is “going into oncoming traffic,” at about 12:11 a.m.
Going by social media accounts and police scanner recordings, the chase went on until about 12:30 a.m. when the driver pulled into the HEB parking lot.
As you watch the video that was later pulled down, you can see the truck drive around the HEB parking lot with a string of police vehicles behind him. He does a lap or two around the parking lot before he pulls up to the entrance’s doors.
He pulls up to the HEB’s entrance and starts to dash in.
However, the real hero of the day may have been someone working at HEB who locked the doors as the truck pulls up.
The individual’s quick actions helped trap the driver. Moments later, you can see officers handcuffing what appears to be the driver (see picture above).
Knoll reported that the driver was arrested and there were nine “undocumented immigrants” in the vehicle.
